1901 William McKinley Presidential Medal. By Charles E. Barber. cf. Failor-Hayden 124. Bronze. MS-64 (NGC).77 mm. A variant of this type, produced in honor of the 25th president of the United States, with the same basic obverse design as Failor-Hayden 124, but from an entirely different die with notable variations to McKinleys portrait and the presentation of his name WILLIAM MCKINLEY around the periphery, all set within a beaded border. Handsome golden-olive patina blankets surfaces that are smooth with a soft satin finish. This is a fitting tribute to the slain president, who died September 14, 1901, after being shot by Polish-American anarchist Leon Frank Czolgosz a week earlier. This is only the second example from these dies that we have handled in recent memory, the first a silver impression that realized $2,280 as lot 3059 in our May 2019 Baltimore Auction. From the Larry Baber Collection. Collector envelope included.
