RUSSIA. Silver Pugachev Ruble Novodel (Pattern), 1771. Sestoretsk Mint. Catherine II (the Great). NGC MS-65. 一枚同为圆点饰边( Russland/Sodermann旧藏 ),另外两枚则为光边(其中一枚为Goodman/Hesselgesser旧藏) 。 KM-NB110 var. (plain edge); Bit-H1001 (R3); Sev-2059 (RR); Uzd-4093 (RR). Engrailed edge variety. This delightful Gem pattern issue, featuring a deep gunmetal gray allure along with a good deal of radiant brilliance emanating from beneath, also stands as an incredible RARITY within the Russian series. Outside of the present example, this cataloger could locate just three other specimens to sell in the past two decades--one with an engrailed edge (the Russland/Sodermann specimen) and two with a plain edge (one of which is the Goodman/Hesselgesser specimen). For comparison, the engrailed edge example, last appearing in 2008 and listed merely as "about uncirculated" and with some obvious (and slightly distracting) planchet impurities, realized a $100,000 hammer. The present piece clearly exceeds its edge-sharing companion in terms of resounding eye appeal and overall beauty. Worthy of a strong bid and detailed focus. The name for this interesting type draws from its fairly non-descript nature, in that no reference--either in name or in monogram form--is made to the ruling monarch, Catherine II. Instead, the design elements are quite direct, merely presenting the imperial double eagle and a nod to the intended denomination. Around the time of this patterns design, Yemelyan Ivanovich Pugachev--a soldier with the Yair Cossacks--became a fugitive on account of abandoning his post. Attempting to capitalize on the growing discontent of the Cossacks, he reinvented himself, pretending instead to be the former czar (and deposed husband of Catherine), Peter III. Should the Cossacks (along with peasants and disaffected "old believers") join him in his insurrection, he would promise greater autonomy, an end to serfdom, and a return to the old ways. His revolt, along with his pretense, was quashed and ended with his execution in Moscow in early 1775. There was obviously no connection to Pugachev and the striking of this pattern, though the allure of an insurrection by a pretender along with a coin that was surprisingly non-descript in its design allowed for this fanciful, and rather apocryphal, tale to remain linked with the issue. From the Pinnacle Collection.<p>Ex: Hess-Divo (10/2003) Lot # 165 @ ChF 78,000 (hammer).
