GUATEMALA. 8 Reales, 1804-NG M. Nueva Guatemala Mint. Charles IV. NGC SPECIMEN-65. KM-53; Cal-Type 74 #635. A stunning relic from this remote mint that was produced with obvious care. On both sides, the designs appear with razor-sharp clarity and the surrounding fields display immense reflective qualities. Undoubtedly set aside shortly after having been made, this piece has acquired a deep blend of multihued tone that envelopes the surfaces, with close inspection revealing limited traces of past handling. Overall, a magnificent piece, which easily surpasses all others we have seen of the type. A landmark opportunity for the collector seeking the very finest coins as such.Regarding the assignment of the "Specimen" designation by NGC, although it is not out of the realm of possibility that this coin was struck with the intention of a special presentation, we have never heard of the existence of contemporary documents that confirm this practice at the Nueva Guatemala Mint, nor are we aware of any other instances from the Spanish Colonial period where a specimen-quality coin exists. That said, this coin is undeniably special, and NGC recognized it as well. While the entire story regarding its existence is unlikely to be revealed, several things are certain; it was masterfully made -- it was carefully kept -- it is magnificently preserved.</em> Ex: Formosa Collection (HA 1/2014) Lot # 24481 @ $18,800.
