1849. PCGS graded AU-58. Repunched date with 1 high, then lowered. Bright and lustrous, with excellent surfaces and strong luster. A nice untoned example. This is the first year the California Gold Rush really got moving as word spread back east of the gold discovery way out west in 1848. People from the east flooded west, by boat, overland and by whatever means they could travel. The easy pickings were short lived though, and most of the miners failed to secure riches. Here is a splendid coin that serves to recall these exciting times, rich in history and quality as well. Pop 29; 46 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 8601) <DOTLEADER> Estimated Value $1,400 - 1,500
