Organized in response to President Lincolns call In April, 1861, New Jerseys First Brigade was originally commanded by General Phil Kearny, a hero of the Mexican War and one of the most capable of the Union generals. The Brigade, made up during the entire war of units only from New Jersey, saw action continuously from 1862 on, and is memorialized in New Jerseys Gettysburg Battlefield monument.
