1838-D Classic Head Half Eagle. McCloskey-1, the only known dies. AU-50 (PCGS). According to the government archives, the entire production of coins was produced from a single die pair, thus just one die variety is known. Only 20,583 pieces were struck of which it is estimated that only 200-250 specimens remain today. A few tiny marks show on both sides of this pleasing green-golden specimen. A great example of this important variety, the first and only Dahlonega Mint of the type, and a desirable design inasmuch as it has the mintmark prominently placed on the obverse above the date rather than hidden away on the reverse as in later issues.
