Undated (1784) Captain James Cook Memorial Medal. Silver. 42 mm. By L. Pingo. Betts-553, BHM-258, Eimer-780. Specimen-55 (PCGS).A pleasing example whose otherwise light silver surfaces exhibit outlines of warm olive-russet patina to most of the design elements, especially those around the peripheries. Sharply defined overall with much of the original reflective finish remaining in the fields. This type was produced in 1784 for the Royal Society as a tribute to Captain Cook, who was elected a Fellow of the Society in 1775. The Societys records show that 322 medals were struck in silver.
