1916 Standing Liberty Quarter. Poor-1 (PCGS).This is a fully original Standing Liberty quarter with pleasing golden-gray surfaces. Wear is commensurate with the assigned grade; the date is missing, the borders are worn far down into the surrounding field areas, and other elements of the design are also no longer evident. Without a date, one might ask how PCGS determined that this is a 1916 Standing Liberty quarter as opposed to an example of one of the 1917-dated Type I issues. The key date, first year 1916 has slightly different styling to Libertys portrait than the 1917-dated Type I coins, the most readily evident feature on the present coin being the thin hair curl on the back of Libertys head that extends to the letter B in LIBERTY. Given the rarity and consequent cost of this issue in all grades, this basal example is sure to appeal to many buyers in todays highly competitive numismatic market.
