1873 Two-Cent Piece. Close 3. Proof-30 (PCGS).A curious, yet desirable level of preservation for this scarce two-cent issue. Both sides are richly and originally toned in antique copper brown, the surfaces overall smooth in hand with good detail to the major design elements. This short-lived denomination from the 19th century U.S. Mint passed into history in 1873 with a Proof-only mintage that is usually estimated at 600 pieces. Close 3 examples, as here, are thought to be originals, while their Open 3 counterparts are considered restrikes. Both variants are scarce and eagerly sought in todays market.
