Friedberg Unlisted (W-Unlisted). 1875 $1,000 Legal Tender Note. PCGS Currency Gem New 66 PPQ. Face Proof.Hessler-Unlisted. Printed on India paper, mounted on wide margin paper. Without imprint by the BEP. Series of 1875 printed vertically at right. Black and white portions of the face only. Classic portrait of DeWitt Clinton at center, bisecting UNITED and STATES. Left end, Columbus seated in his library with globe and map at his feet. Engraved signature of Allison at left only, no Spinner. Upper right, "Patented July 24, 1866" seen on the 1869 series plate. Zero numbers perforated in both serial number blocks. Both Friedberg and Whitman show no entry for the 1875 series as it was never produced and approved. An important and unpublished transitional date essay. The plate style is apparently from the 1869 "Rainbow" plate, but devoid of the Spinner signature. In any format, extremely important and unique to our knowledge. Types from this style are exceedingly rare and part of an elite American currency genre. One of the great highlights of the Caine Collection. From Stacks Americana Sale, September 30-October 2, 2010, lot 1066.
