The face background was prepared with a medal-ruling machine. Black lettering against a light gray background. Interest table boxed at center with white background. Christopher Columbus at left gazing at natural scenery to right. Back in green with an engraving unique to this experimental design. Obligation at left and counterfeiting clause, right. Ornate central counter with 500 and superimposed and entwined US. Strictly an experimental design in nature as the engraving method is a vastly different procedure than used on all federal designs produced for circulation. Excellent appeal and detail are seen with just a small pair of mounting remnants at the left and right of the back. One of just three face and back pairs known by Hessler.
