The mintage for this issue is a generous 982,000 pieces with a face value of $19,640,000. Likely, many were sent overseas later in the decade, accounting for most of those surviving today. Indeed, thanks largely to repatriations from foreign bank hoards in recent decades, the 1870-S is a readily obtainable Type II Liberty Head double eagle in lower grades.
