1787 Fugio Copper. Pointed Rays. Newman 18-U, W-6960. Rarity-4. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils. AU-55 (PCGS).Exceptional quality and eye appeal for this conditionally scarce die pairing. Glossy copper brown surfaces are smooth in hand with no noticeable marks or other significant blemishes. Closer inspection with a loupe reveals light surface scale, most extensively on the reverse, but to no detriment to either the quality or eye appeal of this piece. The strike is sharply executed and well centered, both sides with partial denticulation around the borders. Newman Die State B/C.pA scarcer die pairing in the Fugio copper series, Newman 18-U becomes particularly challenging to locate above the EF grade level. In fact, Bowers (Whitman colonial coin encyclopedia, 2009) states that "several About Uncirculated top the condition census." This PCGS-certified Choice AU is certainly a superior quality example that undoubtedly numbers among the finest known for the variety. Eagerly awaiting inclusion in a highly regarded Fugio copper set.
