1889 Inaugural Centennial Medal. Cast Bronze. 112 mm. By Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Philip Martiny. Musante GW-1135, Baker 671, Douglas-53. MS-66 (NGC).Lovely golden-bronze surfaces exhibit intermingled rose-brown highlights that are more pronounced on the reverse. Boldly defined throughout with blemish-free surfaces that readily uphold the validity of the impressive premium Gem grade from NGC. Highest condition bronze examples of this impressive type are elusive, and this magnificent specimen is desirable not only as a premier Washington item but as one of the few truly collectable examples of the artistic genius of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Additionally, original cardboard boxes of issue are virtually unheard of, although the present lot includes the original box. It is in Fine condition with light staining and the top considerably chipped and tattered around the edge, although the box is fully intact and presents quite well. A find for the astute bidder that is worthy of the strongest bids. (Total: 2 items)
