FRANCE. Essai 5 Franc, 1874. Brussels Mint. PCGS SP-62 Gold Shield.Maz-2340 var. By Wurden. A popular private-issue satirical type, struck bearing the portrait of Patrice de MacMahon who was the Chief of State of the Third Republic (1873-1875) with the whimsical addition of Napoleons signature below the bust where the engravers name is often placed. The reverse features Papal-style arms, undoubtedly the result of MacMahons staunch observance of Catholicism. Struck in a number of metals, this example appears to be in brass, with the addition of warm orange and blue tone in the fields. Seemingly very high end for the assigned grade as well with no marks or noteworthy handling to speak of.
