Fr. 268. 1896 $5 Silver Certificate. PCGS Currency Very Choice New 64.Argued by many as Americas most popular currency design, the 1896 $5 "Educational" note was conceived by Thomas F. Morris and mostly engraved by G.F.C. Smillie. The green back with portraits of Civil War heroes U.S. Grant and Philip H. Sheridan was engraved by Lorenzo Hatch. The note has very nice eye appeal with great color and broad margins on both sides. We are not sure why PCGS has left of the PPQ designation as this note appears to be fully original with nice embossing clearly seen through the holder. Rich black face printing with strong red seal color. The green back is bold with strong detail throughout. A terrific example of this elegantly rendered type note. From the Marc D. Cohen Collection.
