Raleigh, North Carolina. Treasury of North Carolina. May 2, 1824. 75 Cents. PMG Choice Fine 15.(Shull CR.025) No imprint. Portrait of Washington at center. SEVENTY FIVE in left end panel, 75 in right end panel. Denomination die counters flank the portrait to left and right. An extremely rare early North Carolina state issued note in a denomination we have not seen in quite some time. This note is signed by John S. Haywood (For Public Treasurer). The Public Treasurer was his father John Haywood. The elder was a popular figure and the longest serving treasurer in state history. Upon his fathers death in 1827 the younger Haywood was selected to replace him as Public Treasurer but declined as evidence of his fathers malfeasance in office came to light. This note is above average for the issue with bright, well cut paper that is boldly signed and printed. The grading service makes mention of "Minor Repairs" on the back of the holder. They are quite minor and affect very little. This is an important offering from the Tar Heel State.
