VA-225. Virginia. May 7, 1781. $2,000. PMG Extremely Fine 40 Net.No. 820. Signed by Bolling Stark, John Lyne and J. Hopkins. Printed on thick paper by John Dunlap in Philadelphia. PMG notes "Previously Mounted, Edge Damage." Forever destined to be a legendary note since it is the highest denomination piece of colonial currency issued from any colony. By the early 1780s inflation was running rampant, thus necessitating some of the very high denominations seen from this series. A year ago, the Newman note, which graded PCGS Apparent EF 45, sold for a robust $2,880. Very few of these $2000 notes become available and savvy collectors tend to pay whatever it takes to obtain them.
