Fr. 293. 1886 $10 Silver Certificate. PCGS Currency About New 50 PPQ.The "Tombstone Note" is a long-standing favorite. Depicted within a tombstone-shaped frame is Thomas A. Hendricks, Vice President of the United States under the first administration of Grover Cleveland, serving from March 4, 1885 until his death on November 25, 1885. Likely, when the Series of 1886 Silver Certificates were being conceived, Hendricks passing was still being mourned, and President Cleveland approved of the posthumous honor conferred upon his erstwhile vice president. While PCGS has technically graded several finer, it is one of only three "PPQ" designated notes in About Uncirculated or higher. There are no "PPQ" designated notes in grades above 53PPQ attesting to the true rarity of finding an original example of this very sought after type.
