1866-S Liberty Head Eagle. No Motto. Fine-12 (PCGS). CAC.A wonderfully original example with glints of copper-rose iridescence to otherwise khaki-gold surfaces. Uncommonly smooth for a well circulated example of this challenging issue, and retaining bold outline detail to all devices that allows full appreciation of this classic design. The final No Motto Liberty Head eagle and the only one bearing this date, the 1866-S has a paltry original mintage of 8,500 pieces. With the vast majority of coins lost to commercial use, no more than 55 or 60 examples are believed extant in all grades. At the Fine grade level it is difficult for us to imagine a more appealing survivor. Worthy of a strong bid, and seemingly earmarked for inclusion in an advanced collection of Liberty Head eagles or San Francisco Mint gold coinage. From the Fairmont Collection.
