AUSTRIA. Taler, 1683. Vienna Mint. NGC MS-62.Hirsch-21; Voglh-239; Mont-919. Struck to celebrate the relief of Vienna from the two month long Turkish siege in September of 1683. The repulsion of the Turks marked a turning point in European history, as the Holy League (Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) fought alongside the Holy Roman Empire to drive the Turks almost completely out of Hungary. The obverse design includes intricate detail, in some ways resembling a moon-phase watch dial, with the reverse displaying a 23 line proclamation. Examples in such a high state of preservation as the present are RARE, with this piece displaying dark toning and hints of iridescence throughout. One small planchet flaw in center of reverse.NGC MS-62.
