1890-CC Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-60 (PCGS).This is a wonderfully original example with deep rose outlines to smartly impressed, bold to sharp devices. Otherwise honey-gold in appearance, both sides are fully lustrous with an uncommonly smooth appearance for the assigned grade. The mintage for this popular issue is 91,209 pieces, up more than 60,000 coins from the preceding years double eagle tally at the Carson City Mint. Face value was $1,824,180. Most of the 1890-CC double eagles in Mint State have come to light within the past two decades. Twenty-one years ago in our (Bowers and Merenas) sale of the Stetson University Collection we noted in part, "PCGS has certified no example higher than MS-61. Most pieces are in notably lower grades, usually EF or AU." Thanks to recent repatriations from foreign bank hoards, some 500 to 750 or so Mint State 1890-CC twenties are now believed extant.
