Pursuant to the terms of the authorizing Act of April 13, 1936, the Philadelphia Mint struck 100,000 half dollars of this type for sale to collectors, along with an additional 53 Assay pieces. A total of 81,773 pieces were eventually sold, and the remaining 18,227 examples were melted.
