America with those knowne parts in that unknowne worlde both people and manner of buildings described and inlarged by I.S. Ano. 1626. Fourth state. John Speed. London, 1676. 20 x 15 ½", hand color. English text on verso. A lovely iconic work bordered with decorative vignettes depicting the indigenous peoples and cities of the Americas. This is the first atlas map to show California as an island and accurately depict the east coast of North America. By the time this map was published, it had been established that California was a peninsula, but the political pressure exerted by Spanish claims led cartographers, Speed first, to continue the fallacy of California as an island. Some small, tight splits in margins with minor repairs. Very Good.
