By 1864 the Mint had adjusted its expectations for yearly Proof coin sales to more realistic levels than it had hoped for during the late 1850s and early 1860s. The Proof 1864 half dollar, for example, has a mintage of 460 pieces as opposed to 1,000 coins each for the Proof 1860 and Proof 1861.
