1778 Captain John Paul Jones Medal. Silver. 57 mm. Plain Edge. U.S. Mint Restrike. Betts-568, Adams and Bentley-8, Julian NA-1. MS-64 (NGC).,Deep silver gray with accents of darker patina in the recesses of the design and on the high points of the portrait. The texture is finely matte, a style of medallic surface preparation that generally points to a late 19th or early 20th century manufacture. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint from copy dies. The Jones medal is prohibitively rare as a silver original and enjoys strong demand in just about any form. Silver restrikes, though not nearly as precious as originals in any metal, are certainly worthy of inclusion in any extensive collection of Comitia America medals.Donated by Stanley DeForest Scott to benefit the endowment campaign for the Executive Director position at the American Numismatic Society.
