1779 DeFleury at Stony Point Medal. Bronze. 46 mm. Betts-566, Julian MI-4. MS-65BN (NGC).,Beautiful dark mahogany bronze surfaces are impressively uniform with only a couple of small abrasions on the highest points of the reverse. A bit of light surface oil in the obverse fields subdues them slightly, but soft reflectivity is still seen and stands as a nice background for the sharp devices. The original medals are extremely rare, with fewer than ten accounted for by Adams and Bentley. The U.S. Mint made these copy dies in 1880, as noted in the lower reverse exergue, but the number made seems to have been small. According to the Adams-Bentley reference, at least 35 specimens were struck from these dies, but they do not frequently appear for sale and they are very much in demand as important entries in the Comitia Americana series.Donated by Stanley DeForest Scott to benefit the endowment campaign for the Executive Director position at the American Numismatic Society.
