(1919) Assay Commission Medal. Uniface striking of the reverse. Bronze. 51 mm. By John R. Sinnock. As JK AC-63. MS-64 (NGC).Apparently a trial striking of the new Sinnock reverse die featuring a caduceus wielding Mercury, lightly clad in a cape, along with a representation of an ancient Greek coin. The blank side is simply flat and rimless, and the entire medal is finished in the same olive-brown patina as the standard issue. This piece has the typical random darker "freckles" of other U. S. Mint bronze medals of the period, and there are a few minor stray marks on both sides that do not distract to any significant degree. A rare variant of a very scarce medal.
