CHINA. Pattern Kuping Tael Struck in Gold, CD 1906. Tientsin Mint.Fr-1; L&;M-1023; Kann-1540; KM-Pn301; Chang foundation-pg.22 #5; Wenchao-pg.46 #8 (rarity four stars). Struck on an experimental basis as patterns only and never released into circulation.

The plans to issue gold coinage in units of one tael for circulation, unfortunately, never materialized. This was largely due to Chinas lack of gold reserve combined with the current currency being based on the silver standard. A limited number of pattern taels were struck in gold, as well as trial strikes in white metal. All should be considered rare today and are highly sought after by collectors.
