山东省造民国15年贰拾圆 NGC MS 64
CHINA. Shantung. 20 Dollars Pattern Struck in Gold, Year 15 (1926). Tientsin Mint.Fr-6; L&M-1065; K-1535; KM-Pn9; Hsu-30; Wenchao-pg.84 #46 (rarity four stars). This EXTREMELY RARE issue was produced in 1926 by the order of Warlord Zhang Zhongchang, commander-in-chief of the joint army of Zhilu and Shandong province. Zhang Zhongchang was one of the more colorful warlords of his time. He had such nicknames as "72 Cannon Chang" and the "Dogmeat General," the latter acquired for his love for the game Pai Gow.
He is said to have kept some 35 concubines of various nationalities, each of whom he had assigned a number since he could not remember all of their names.<br /> This fascinating issue was struck at the Tientsin mint in small quantities, strictly on a pattern basis and never released for circulation. The most likely reason this type was never issued for circulation was a lack of physical metal. In one instance there was not enough metal to issue stars for the officers promoted within his army. To compensate for the lack of metal, he ordered the stars fashioned from the foil paper of cigarette packages.
