Fr. 190b. 1864 $10 Compound Interest Treasury Note. PMG Very Fine 25 Net. Repaired, Internal Splits.;These so-called "Middle of the Book" notes are some of the most elusive and beautiful designs of federally issued United States Currency. The slightly larger format, even when compared to large-size notes, allows more design features to be utilized. These $10 Compound Interest notes incorporated a familiar central "Black Eagle" vignette, to be later used on the series 1899 One Dollar Silver Certificates. A portrait vignette of Salmon P. Chase, left which was prominently featured on the 1862 One Dollar legal tenders and later the small-size $10,000 Federal Reserve Notes. Right, a female representing Peace. The serpentine styling of "UNITED STATES" at upper left is remarkable similar to the Five Dollar "Wood Chopper" notes of 1869 through 1907. An overprint stating the note type was applied through a bronzing process and a wonderfully ornate back utilized heavy geometric lathe work.<p>This 119756 numbered plate B note retains the appeal of a higher end Very Fine example with bold overprints and mostly even circulation. The bronzing has oxidized to the commonly seen green color although the wording is still sharp. Some well executed repairs will help keep the integrity of the note strong for future collectors and finer material is simply rare. Overall a great opportunity for the collector seeking to acquire an attractive example of this type.
