1868 Nickel Three-Cent Piece. Proof-66+ Deep Cameo (PCGS).;An extraordinary strike and condition rarity from the early Proof nickel three-cent series. Wisps of pale reddish-gold iridescence drift over surfaces that are so carefully preserved as to be virtually pristine. Satiny in texture with a razor sharp strike, the devices contrast markedly with deep pools of reflectivity in the fields. Produced during an era in which the United States Mint did not record mintages for Proof minor coins, the total number of Proof 1868 nickel three-cent pieces struck is unknown. Standard numismatic references often use an estimate of 600+ pieces, although the actual mintage is likely on the order of 750 to 1,000 coins. This is one of the best produced and preserved survivors that we have ever offered, a coin that would serve as a highlight in any collection.
