1808 Washington Benevolent Society Medal. Silver. 42 mm (without hanger). 28.4 grams. Baker-327, Musante GW-94, Julian RF-23. Choice Very Fine.;With original suspension loop, which has been lost on many survivors of this early medal. Pleasing dark silver-gray surfaces with hints of orange and blue in many areas. Well preserved, we note only scattered marks and some slight edge ticks. Musante notes that relatively few of these rare medals have survived with the original hanger intact, and that high grade examples are seldom encountered. This medal was engraved by John Reich, and struck at the young United States Mint in Philadelphia. These were produced for a New York branch of the Society, though, according to Robert Julian, there were branches operating in other cities, as well.;Collector envelope with attribution notation included.
