1906 Liberty Double Eagle. MS-63 (NGC).;Rich honey-gold toning on both sides is accented by subtle green at the peripheries. The fields display dense and satiny luster throughout, complementing the frosty, matte-like design elements. The surfaces are overall smooth and appealing for the assigned grade. A truly delightful piece.
The 1906 Liberty double eagle is among the scarcest 20th century issues of the series, competing with just the 1902 and 1905 mintages in absolute rarity. With only 69,596 coins struck, the 1906 is scarce in lower Mint State grades and quite elusive in MS-63 and finer. It is noteworthy that even the Smithsonian is lacking a circulation strike example in the National Numismatic Collection. While survivors of the 1906 issue have been slowly repatriated from European holdings, these rarely exceed MS-61 or MS-62 preservation. We anticipate that this attractive MS-63 will attract strong bids when it crosses the auction block.
;
