Obv: Bust of Martha Washington facing right with MARTHA WASHINGTON in the right field. Above is VIRGINIA and below is the date 1759. Rev: Three-quarters view of Mount Vernon with MOUNT VERNON below and HOME OF THE WASHINGTON FAMILY inscribed around. The surfaces exhibit a pleasing honey-wheat hue with richer amber tones visible in some areas. A mild reflectivity is visible on each side, subtly contrasting the satiny devices.
In an effort to test compositions for the new dollar coin the Mint resurrected the Martha Washington designs employed in 1965, striking pieces internally and employing independent contractors such as IDX Inc., OMX Industries, and Olin Brass to experiment with alloys. Though this manifestation of the earlier design is nearly identical, there are diagnostic variations in motif positioning and font style that distinguish the 1999 pieces as proprietary creations.
,PCGS# 511836.
