No. 127942, Plate Y. A rare manuscript endorsement with ties to the Tar Heel State is seen on this T-41. The inscription neatly penned on the back reads "Issued 10th March 1863 By R.M. Oates AQM 37th NC Rgt." Captain Robert M. Oates volunteered at Mecklenburg County, North Carolina October 22, 1861 and reported to the 37th North Carolina Infantry. His duties kept him mostly in North Carolina and Virginia. The 37th participated in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg among others. It was members of the 37th who are believed to have fired on Stonewall Jackson at Chancellorsville, cutting down one of the Souths greatest commanders. The note is just moderately circulated with great manuscripts and a January 1865 Interest Paid stamp from Raleigh also seen on the back. We believe this is the second example to be discovered of Oates who is listed as an R-15 in the new McNeil reference. This note is just 20 serial numbers removed from the note plated in that book.,From the Old Virginia Collection.
