Head of Athena facing right, wearing crested Attic helmet adorned with three olive leaves and palmette; Reverse: Owl standing right head facing, olive sprig and crescent moon behind, all within incuse square. The Athenian Drachm as a denomination is scarcely seen at auction, and when they surface they can typically be found in well worn condition. Not so for this example from the early Starr group for this denomination. It is easy to see why this group is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful produced. Struck from high relief and exceptionally fine style dies, this example received the utmost care and precision during its minting, as evidenced by the quality of the planchet and the expert strike details present.
