CHINA--FOREIGN BANKS. Deutsch-Asiatische Bank. 10 Taels, 1.3.1907. P-S302s. S/M#T101-12d. Specimen. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. Tientsin. An appealing and attractive specimen from Tientsin. Wonderful, intense blue color is seen on the fine engraving on this German-produced issue. Just the faintest hint of (mis)handling is seen on this example, which still retains fresh paper and plenty of originality visible in the PMG holder. Various overprints and perforations are seen, along with an all-zero serial number, clearly confirming its status as a specimen.Tianjin (Tientsin in Wade-Giles) has a history dating back over a thousand years, but it rose to prominence during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) as a crucial military and trading hub. Originally a small fishing village, it became strategically important due to its location at the confluence of the Hai River and the Grand Canal, serving as a gateway to Beijing. In 1404, the Ming court officially established Tianjin as a garrison town, fortifying it to protect the capital from coastal threats. During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), Tianjin expanded as a key commercial and shipping center, linking inland China to international trade routes. Its importance grew even further after the Second Opium War (1856-1860) when it became one of Chinas treaty ports, leading to rapid modernization and foreign influence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An attractive note and worthy of consideration for the advanced collector, not to be missed! One of just three such specimens in the PMG population report as of the time of cataloging, including the misattributed note graded PMG 58 that we sold in April 2025 for $31,200 including the Buyers Premium. From the Renaissance Collection of Chinese Military Banknotes.
