(ca. 1837). “Van Buren Riding His Cow” Printing on Port Carbon Saving Fund Society Five Cents. Hard Times Era Satirical Note. Rulau HT#UNL. PMG Fine 12.No. 1499. This unique example has a splendid folk art rendition satirizing Martin Van Burens involvement in the Jacksonian era banking crisis. The blank back of this circulated, repurposed scrip note has been block printed by some local concern. The lower right displays "Van Buren Riding His Cow." The cow appears on other satirical notes from the period. The likely local application of the satire on the back of a circulating issuer would certainly spread the message to a wider audience. Unlisted in Rulau and unpublished until appearing at auction in 2024 where it met with furious bidding. The printing is quite sharp on this example, and the original printed art should be considered as Fine. The Hugh Shull Collection of Hard Times Era & Historical Notes. Ex: Heritage 2024 Winter U.S. Obsolete Showcase Auction #62234 (01/2024), Lot #95305.
