1837. E.D. Hudson - Hudson’s Specie Circular, Auburn, New York, Six Pence or 6 1/4 Cents. Hard Times Era Satirical Note. Rulau HT#NA23. PMG Very Good 10.No. 1191. This Hard Times Satirical issuer is much closer to being an actual scrip note than any of the others cataloged here. Its Rulau listing is very appropriate due to its title and the central obligation specifies "in Specie, (not Rags!)." The title with "Specie Circular" was inspired by the 1836 executive order by Jackson restricting government land purchases to specie only and not "soft" paper currency favored by those speculators. A bolded satirical reference at the bottom says "Rag Money will be paid for Silver Dollars, and the Premium given." These circulated heavily as seen here and its Six Pence co-denomination indicates trade with Canada and the continuing circulation of British coins in commerce. This is actually superior grade for the series, and the signature is quite bold. The Hugh Shull Collection of Hard Times Era & Historical Notes.
