DENMARK. Ducat, 1719. Rendsborg Mint. Frederik IV. NGC MS-62.Fr-226; KM-8; Hede-60; Sieg-61; Schou-1; Lange-100; Bruun-7481. Weight: 3.43 gms. Mintmaster: Bastian Hille (BH). Engraver: Gottfried Metelles. Superior example of this scarce one-year type minted in the fortified city of Rendsburg (Rendsborg). An absolutely stunning near-Choice exemplar of this two-year type, which, with only a very few in private ownership, is considerably rarer than the Half Ducat.
The engraver, Gottfried Wilhelm Metelles, was also active in Minden and Königsberg.
Although Rendsburgs importance for the Danish king grew during the 18th century up until the Danish defeat in the Second Schleswig War in 1864, the Mint was only functional for four years during the reign of Frederik IV.From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
Ex: Frederik Chr. Bech Collection (Copenhagen - 1906) Lot # 942.
Ex: L. Christian Nielsen Collection (Copenhagen - 1878) Lot # 79.
