DENMARK. 1/4 Portugaloser, 1592. Haderslev Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU Details--Mount Removed.Fr-64; Hede-3; Sieg-155; Harck-2.4; Schou-7; Bruun-4598. Weight: 8.69 gms. Mintmaster: Andreas Metzner. Remains from a contemporary mounting positioned right above the royal coat of arms presumably to be used as a medallion by high ranking dignitaries. Magnificently detailed with even the profile of the man in the moon clearly visible on the mintmark.
Of the handful of known exemplars of this important one-year type, only one other is in private hands. This was acquired by L. E. Bruun with his purchase of the Johan G. Guildal collection in 1918. As the Bille-Brahe exemplar however was in much better overall condition, the Guildal piece was sold in the 1925 auction of duplicates (#1748).
Rather unconventionally; the central field of the coat of arms is occupied by the horseman of Ditmarschen (Ditmarsken) instead of the two bars of Oldenburg and the cross of Delmenhorst. Following a complaint by the Council of State this was however changed for the subsequent issues. From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922).
