T-41. Confederate Currency. 1862 $100. PMG Very Fine 30. Penned Military Endorsement. "Capt. John P. Dickinson AQM, 53rd Regiment Alabama Partisan Rangers."No. 62713. Plate Z. Here is a deceptive rarity that may seem at first glance to be a generic $100 issued under the authority of the Confederate States of America. The astute collector armed with numismatic references such as Confederate Quartermasters, Commissaries, and Agents penned by Michael McNeil will no doubt recognize the penned endorsement seen on the verso to be that of John P. Dickinson who served as a Captain and Assistant Quartermaster in the 53rd Regiment Alabama Partisan Rangers. Dickinsons service with the 53rd spanned the units organization in November 1862 until surrendering in North Carolina as part of the forces surrendered by General Joseph E. Johnston in April 1865. The 53rd nonetheless saw limited action close to the frontlines during the Atlanta Campaign and harassed Shermans forces during the destructive "March to the Sea" that preceded the capture of Savannah by Union forces. Dickinsons penned endorsement is nonetheless extremely rare with just a handful of pieces recorded. Another T-41 that features Dickinsons endorsement and was issued from Tuscumbia (Alabama) sold for approximately $2,585.00 in 2012 by the time bidding had ended. That very realization from 2012 offers testament to the rarity of this specific endorsement and portends an uncommon degree of interest from potential bidders for this very item.
