1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Small Planchet. Noe-23, Salmon 8-C, W-875. Rarity-6. EF Details--Repaired (PCGS).66.0 grains. The obverse and reverse are both toned in a pleasing pewter gray color with a hint of pale rose. The surfaces are granular, but there are no marks of note; the semicircular planchet cutter mark across the upper third of the obverse is as made, as is another, fainter, one on the reverse across the tops of the digits 52 in the date. Obverse slightly off center to lower right with top of S, all but lowest bead in neighboring rosette, and tops of IN running off the flan. The reverse is almost perfectly centered, just slightly tight at left. Some letters on both sides soft, as struck. This is a rare and conditionally challenged Noe number. A PCGS VF-30 traded hands for $2,585 in our November 2015 Baltimore Auction. Our August 2023 offering of the Sydney F. Martin Collection brought the second Ford coin back to market; certified EF-40 by PCGS at that time, it realized $4,080. The PCGS AU-53 in our November 2024 Showcase Auction was sharper and more visually appealing than either of those. The Richard August coin offered here also wins high marks for its overall sharpness - it is sharper than the PCGS AU-53 in most areas - although the granularity of its surfaces moves it down somewhat in the census. With precious few of these around, however, it is no wonder that, in addition to Mr. August, the Norwebs, Hain and Partrick all saw fit to include this Noe-23 Pine Tree among their extensive numismatic holdings.<p>This lot includes NGC insert #2048905-033 with a grade of AU Details--Repaired, Noe-23 attribution, and Norweb-Partrick provenance from an earlier certification of this coin.PCGS# 915761.
