ICELAND. Landsbanki Islands. 100 Kronur, 31.5.1927. P-26. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.The highest denomination of the 1927 series of Iceland, the 100 Kronur is an exceptional rarity that seldom becomes available for sale in any grade. While none of the four denominations issued can be considered common in uncirculated grades, it is both the 50 and 100 Kronur where we enter the realm of "world-class rarity". The series circulated for about a decade before it was withdrawn, at which point most examples were redeemed. Today, we can look at the PMG population report to get a sense of the rarity of this type in any grade. It shows that just three examples have been graded, including the present example. We sold one of the others, graded PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ in our April 2021 Hong Kong Sale, where it brought an impressive $27,600. Of note is the fact that the serial number of that note was just one apart from the example offered today, and when comparing the notes, they certainly seem virtually identical to us. An exceptional opportunity for the Scandinavian specialist and a fantastic engraving surely on the wish list of even the most advanced collectors. From the Nordjysk Collection.
