1849 Liberty Seated Half Dime. Proof-64+ (PCGS). CAC.Medallic alignment. A glittering beauty characterized by generally sharp, satiny motifs and blazing mirror fields. Lightly toned in pale golden-olive iridescence that yields to warmer orange-russet highlights here and there at the borders. The only mentionable softness of strike is confined to stars 8 and 11, which are noticeably lacking in centril delineation. An ancient horizontal pin scratch in the right obverse field and area of die polish (as made) on Libertys left knee serve as useful identifiers for provenance purposes.
We doubt that the number of Proofs for the 1849 Liberty Seated half dime could exceed a dozen or so pieces, which squares nicely with the PCGS CoinFacts estimate of 10 to 15 coins extant. The original mintage, of course, is unknown as these Proofs from the 1840s were made only for special presentation and official purposes, on an as-needed basis, and without the number struck being recorded in Mint records. Aside from this piece, the only Proof half dime of this date that we can recall having offered in recent times was the warmly toned NGC Proof-64 specimen in our (Stacks) Norweb Collection Sale of November 2006, lot 26.
