Surpassed in the PMG population report by a single finer example and an exceptional note of an iconic type. The survival of this note at this grade level is nothing short of a miracle. Based on our research, an extremely small group of notes with similar serial numbers has been known in the collecting community. It appears that, shortly after their issue, they were taken out of the colony, probably back to France (where they had been printed at the Banque de France) meaning that unlike most examples they remained problem-free, except for the typical pinholes seen on these notes. No stains, rust, or other issues of any consequence are seen, a noteworthy exception to the majority of notes from the region and time period that were often susceptible to the humid and hot climate in the region.<p>In the years leading up to World War I, French Indochina—comprising Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia—experienced steady economic expansion driven by colonial investment and administrative reforms. The French prioritized infrastructure development, constructing railways, modern ports, and telegraph lines to streamline the export of key commodities such as rice, rubber, coal, and opium. Saigon, Hanoi, and Haiphong emerged as bustling economic centers, facilitating increased trade with France and other global markets. The colonial administration implemented policies to enhance efficiency, including standardized taxation, legal codifications, and land concessions to French companies, which played a dominant role in agriculture, mining, and commerce. Banking institutions, notably the Banque de lIndochine, provided essential financial services, further integrating the colony into France’s global economic network. These efforts reinforced Indochina’s role as a critical supplier of raw materials, ensuring profitability for French enterprises and strengthening its strategic importance within the colonial empire.
