FRENCH INDO-CHINA. Banque de lIndo-Chine. 1 Dollar = 1 Piastre, 1891 (ND 1900-03). P-5. PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45. Haiphong. An exceptional note that combines beauty and rarity. This type, from the Haiphong branch, is the second iteration of this type (after an earlier issue printed in blue) with English text and the denomination as One Dollar - One Piastre. This is an exceptional note that is the sole finest in the PMG population report and is the finest example your cataloger is aware of. Notes for the Banque de lndochines branch in Haiphong were typically printed in smaller quantities than those for Saigon and, as such, are seen much less frequently today. The Haiphong branch in what was then French Cochinchina opened in 1885 and was the third branch of the bank to open, after Saigon and Pondicherry (French India).<p>In the late 19th century, Haiphong emerged as a vital economic hub of French Indochina, driven by its strategic location as a deep-water port. Established as the primary seaport for northern Vietnam, it facilitated trade between Europe, China, and Southeast Asia, fueling rapid commercial growth. The citys infrastructure expanded with modern docks, rail connections to Hanoi, and increased maritime activity, making it a key center for the export of rice, coal, and opium. This economic boom attracted foreign merchants, Chinese traders, and a growing labor force, solidifying Haiphong’s role as an essential gateway for regional and international commerce. This note was issued in part to support the regions economy. Three pinholes and mounting remnants are seen on the back, but we must mention that the mounting is perhaps the sole reason this note survived to the present day in this magnificent state. A tremendous opportunity for the French Indochina or French Colonial specialist. PMG Comments Previously Mounted, Pinholes. No
