CHINA--FOREIGN BANKS. Deutsch-Asiatische Bank. 10 Dollars, 1.3.1907. P-S295a. S/M#T101-3d. PMG Very Fine 25. Tientsin. A scarce fully issued example from the Tientsin branch. A wholesome example that except for some minor mounting remnants retains a fresh and strong appearance for the technical grade. While a handful of others are present in the PMG population report, we do not expect that many of those can boast the same eye-appeal as the present piece, making it an important opportunity for the specialist.<p>Rising tensions between foreign powers and China, particularly during the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901) are directly related to this note issued a few years later. As anti-foreign sentiment grew, the Boxers—supported by elements of the Qing government—attacked foreign residents and their concessions in Tianjin (Tientsin). In June 1900, German troops, along with other foreign forces, were involved in defending the citys foreign quarter and later participated in its occupation. Germany, under Kaiser Wilhelm II, took an aggressive stance, using the incident as part of its justification for the violent suppression of Chinese resistance and expanded its stronghold on the city and its economy.
