1889 (ca. 1950) Benjamin Harrison Indian Peace Medal. Silver. Oval. Failor-Hayden 632, Julian IP-47 (for type), Prucha-58 (for type). Choice About Uncirculated.75.6 mm x 59.4 mm. 2553.9 grains. Medium to light gray with satiny matte surfaces. A bit of handling on the high points, but no problems. Though the oval format was intended as the issued medal for the Harrison administration, it was never actually distributed. Instead, a new round design was created, inspired by a direct request of some intended recipients. No original silver ovals are known to exist, though there are a small number of bronzes. This is the only silver impression we recall having handled. Though it is modern, it is a very rare U.S. Mint medal in silver. XRF tested as 94.57% silver, 5.43 copper.
